Mike Tomlin could be on the road to success as quarterback if Justin Fields leads the Steelers to a 2-0 start

Mike Tomlin could be on the road to success as quarterback if Justin Fields leads the Steelers to a 2-0 start

Wilson’s return is getting closer. He traveled to Denver on Friday and is officially listed as questionable for Week 2, although Tomlin told reporters that being listed as questionable means he’s less likely to start.

Wilson was declared unavailable for selection before kickoff on Sunday and will again be used as the Steelers’ third emergency quarterback in the game against his former team.

Tomlin was asked Tuesday if it was possible for Fields to keep his spot in the starting lineup over Wilson, who was named the starting quarterback before the regular season but was limited in practice until Week 1 due to calf discomfort.

“I’m not going to reassure you with hypothetical scenarios,” Tomlin said, explaining that he will be guided by the participation of the injured players. “Our energy and attention is on those who are available and are scheduled to play. When those who are not healthy get healthy, we will consider it.”

That’s different than saying Wilson is the starter if he’s healthy. It also doesn’t mean Fields will be named the starter in Week 3 if all goes well. There’s still the notion that Wilson can be a successful starter for this team and maybe eventually will be. But if Fields starts the season 2-0, it might not make sense to take him out.

Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith was asked what he saw from Fields in last week’s win over the Falcons: “He was very disciplined. He wasn’t greedy. When the opportunities were there, we took advantage of them.”

Against Atlanta, Fields completed 17 of 23 passes for 156 yards and another 57 yards on the ground.
