Ministry cooperates with Muskegon College in food distribution for students

MUSKEGON, MI – The Muskegon Recuse Mission recently entered into a new partnership with Baker College to stock and supply the on-campus student food pantry.

Food insecurity is an invisible crisis affecting many college students on campuses across the U.S. According to Baker College leadership, the problem is too big for colleges to handle alone.

Therefore, the partnership with the Muskegon Rescue Mission (MRM) will help Baker College expand its services and coordinate operations, the press release said.

“Baker College is grateful for our partnership with Muskegon Rescue Mission,” said Aaron Maike, vice president of Campus Administration and Engagement. “Food insecurity is a significant problem that affects many people, including college students.”

Baker’s Student Pantry is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1903 Marquette Ave. in Muskegon and offers a variety of nonperishable foods, hygiene products and school supplies.

Admission is free for students with a Baker College ID card, and there is no limit on the number of items they can bring. Because MRM is privately funded, donations from the community allow the nonprofit to expand its services to outside food pantries.

In addition to pantry services, the Muskegon Rescue Mission offers Baker students career readiness gift certificates to be redeemed at five local MRM thrift stores, allowing students to purchase seasonal and career-ready clothing each quarter.

MRM and Baker College focus their efforts on eradicating hunger and homelessness on campus.

“By working together, we can ensure that our students can focus on their academic success without suffering the burden of hunger,” Maike added.
