Modernized 119-year-old lumber baron’s lakeside home in Wisconsin for sale for $996,000

Modernized 119-year-old lumber baron’s lakeside home in Wisconsin for sale for 6,000

Michael Klutho loved waking up in his Wisconsin lakeside cabin so much that he bought another one nearby to rent to other Minnesotans who needed a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

At the time, the house was in need of repair and the property itself was so overgrown that Klutho didn’t even know there was a house there until he saw a “For Sale” sign on the property’s pergola overlooking the lake. But it was the story that convinced the St. Paul resident, as lumber baron Frank Stout had built the house for his gardener in 1915.

“My wife and I just fell in love with it on our tour,” he said. “I said, ‘OK, sign me up.'”

Klutho estimates he has invested about $600,000 in renovations and upgrades since purchasing the home in 2013 for about $250,000. The home is 3,240 square feet and has five bedrooms and three bathrooms. In addition to the home in the same listing for $995,950, he is also now selling a small cottage on the 1.4-acre lot that has another bedroom and bathroom.

The couple had been renting the “bed and boat” to vacationers since 2014 and called the house “Pine at the Lakes.” Klutho said it is usually fully booked in the summer, mostly to repeat customers, and after expenses, it brings in about $25,000 a year.

The estate has been the venue for weddings and large gatherings over the years and is also a popular destination during school holidays.

The sale includes all furniture, a dock, a pontoon and advance reservations from interested parties who would like to rent the house next summer, assuming the seller wants to continue the business.

“When it became available, the price was good and it was a fun project. I didn’t realize it would cost me $600,000, but it’s a worthwhile investment,” Klutho said. “Now we have two grandchildren, and my wife and I are retired and traveling a lot more. … But now it’s a fun project for someone else.”
