Pinal County is warning residents to double-check for permits when purchasing groceries.

Earlier this week, authorities warned of an increase in the number of unauthorized food vendors across the county, saying they pose a high risk of foodborne illness.

The statement said cell phone vendors “must display a sticker” indicating that they have gone through the permitting process and have been approved by the county. Anyone who does not do so “will not be permitted to operate in Pinal County.”

Christopher Reimus, deputy director of the county health department, said KJZZ it has become a problem.

“They continued to show up despite being told not to,” he said. “That’s why the county is looking for ways to further increase enforcement.”

While the agency has not provided details of the unauthorized vendors or specific data, it has reportedly encountered numerous food safety violations, including basic rules such as proper handwashing and temperature control of food.

In the meantime, “buyer beware” and you should report unapproved vendors to the department at 520-866-6864 or online by clicking this link.
