More than 500 flights delayed at DIA due to severe thunderstorms

More than 500 flights were delayed at Denver International Airport Tuesday afternoon as the forecast predicted tornadoes, hail and severe thunderstorms for the metropolitan area and eastern plains.

According to FlightAware, there were 543 delayed and 14 canceled flights at DIA as of 5:45 p.m. Arriving flights were delayed an average of 1 hour and 7 minutes, Federal Aviation Administration officials said.

According to the FAA, a traffic management program is in place at the airport due to thunderstorms.

United Airlines reported the most delays: According to FlightAware, there were 202 delayed flights and eight cancellations as of 5:45 p.m. Southwest Airlines reported 171 delayed flights.

According to the National Weather Service, a severe weather warning is in effect for the region until 1 a.m.
