Mountain town in Colorado is on the list of best travel destinations for fall

One of the best things about fall is the opportunity to see the season’s vibrant colors.

USA Today recently published a list of the best fall destinations known for their “beautiful scenery, fantastic weather and abundance of seasonal activities and events.” Estes Park in Colorado made the list.

USA Today’s 10Best is a reader-chosen award program that highlights the best travel destinations, food and drink, hotels and recreation. A panel of experts selects the nominees and readers vote to determine the winners.

Estes Park came in fifth. Known as the base of Rocky Mountain National Park, the town is home to plenty of wildlife, including elk and bear, as well as some classic Colorado scenery. Visitors can celebrate the arrival of fall in Estes Park with events like the Autumn Gold Festival, Elk Fest, and Pumpkins & Pilsners Festival. Wildlife becomes even more active in the fall, and tourists can earn an “I’ve Seen the Elk Rut” sticker if they see elk during mating season in September and October.

First place went to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, featuring the Great Smoky Mountains and the Smoky Mountain Fall Festival.
