Mt. Bachelor ski resort in Central Oregon is for sale

The group that owns the Mt. Bachelor ski area has decided to offer this and two other properties for sale, the company confirmed on Thursday.

Representatives of Powdr Corp., a Utah-based company that has owned Mt. Bachelor since 2001, said it could take six months or more for a sale to go through.

“The upcoming ski season and Bachelor employees will not be impacted,” said Stacey Hutchinson, vice president of communications and government affairs for Powdr Corp. “We want to balance our ski business with new ventures in the national park sector and with the Woodward (brand).”

In the next few weeks, Mt. Bachelor, Eldora Ski Resort in Colorado and SilverStar in British Columbia will be listed with JP Morgan Chase. The company has already sold Killington Resort and Pico Mountain in Vermont. It retains ownership of Copper Mountain in Colorado and Snowbird Resort in Utah, as well as the Woodward brand, which includes camps and ski centers and two national park concessions.

When Powdr Corp. merged with Mount Bachelor Ski Resort in 2001, it outbid Eugene-based Pape Co., according to a report in the Bulletin in 2001. It wasn’t until years later, in 2016, that Powdr bought Sun Country Tours, also based in Bend and for sale. That acquisition allowed the ski resort to expand its summer operations, which were approved by the U.S. Forest Service.

Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort has 4,300 lift-accessible acres, making it the seventh-largest ski resort in North America, according to the company’s website. It is popular for its light, dry snow and long season. The season typically begins right after Thanksgiving and runs through spring. It receives about 400 inches of snow each year.
