Murder suspect Donald Jamison charged in Mexican restaurant

A grand jury has indicted 21-year-old Donald Donell Jamison for the murder of 53-year-old Claudia Barbosa at El Sol Mexican Bar and Grill in Ridge Manor on the morning of July 30, 2024.

Jamison was charged on August 14 with one count of first-degree intentional homicide with a firearm, one count of attempted intentional homicide, two counts of robbery with a firearm and one count of fleeing a police officer.

According to the arrest affidavit, video surveillance showed a black man wearing distinctive orange slippers entering the restaurant around 9:00 a.m. Eventually, the man approached female employee Claudia Barbosa inside the restaurant, who was stocking shelves with merchandise. The man then pulled a black handgun from his pocket and shot Barbosa at point blank range.

The second employee, Nicolas Bello, Barbosa’s son, was nearby and began to struggle with the attacker. The struggle lasted a few seconds until the perpetrator shot Bello. The shooter then searched Barbosa’s pockets and took a red bag from Bello’s body. He then fled the scene.

At around 10:00 a.m., 911 calls came in saying a black man was shooting inside the restaurant. When officers arrived on the scene, they learned the shooter had fled in a black SUV with Georgia plates. They found Barbosa dead and Bello shot but still alive.

At approximately 10:50 a.m., the Florida Highway Patrol conducted a traffic stop in Pasco County and arrested a man matching the description of the attacker, driving a 2023 Nissan Rouge with a Georgia license plate.

He was also wearing orange slippers. During a search of his vehicle due to a police drug alert, the items taken from the victims were found in the vehicle, along with a shirt matching the shirt worn by the shooter at the restaurant. Jamison admitted to recently having illegal drugs in the vehicle. The search also found a loaded Glock 43 with only three rounds of 9mm ammunition in the magazine. Jamison was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

FHP transported Jamison to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office where questioning was conducted. During this process, Jamison attempted to escape and ran from the interrogation room, but was quickly subdued by officers.

Attorney James Martin Brown represents Donald Jamison.
