Narita Airport runway closed after cargo plane makes emergency landing

Narita Airport runway closed after cargo plane makes emergency landing

One of the two runways at Narita Airport in Chiba Prefecture was closed on Tuesday after an American cargo plane was forced to make an emergency landing due to a problem with its hydraulic system, officials said.

An Atlas Air Boeing 747 cargo plane en route to Los Angeles returned to Narita for an emergency landing after the problem became apparent at 1:10 a.m., a transport ministry spokesman said.

“The seven crew members of the Boeing 747 were not injured, but burst tires and damaged wheels were found,” the spokesman said.

Narita’s runway A was closed for at least seven hours, but “the tires have been changed and runway operations are expected to resume at 8:30 a.m.,” he said.

The impact of the closure on other flights was minimal, he added.

Further details on the mechanical problem were not immediately available.

The incident occurred after a brake failure on a Singapore Airlines plane led to the closure of the runway at Narita on Monday.

Fire engines and ambulances rushed to the scene after smoke was reported from the incoming Singapore Airlines plane. However, emergency services found no signs of fire and no one was injured.

The company later clarified that the flight had encountered a “technical problem with the brakes during landing.”

Airport and fire officials said Narita Airport’s Runway B was closed for nearly an hour after the flight landed at about 7:40 a.m.
