NASA reports on the launch of Progress 89 and docking with the space station

NASA will provide live coverage of the launch and docking of a Roscosmos cargo spacecraft carrying nearly three tons of food, fuel and supplies to the Expedition 71 crew aboard the International Space Station.

The launch of the unmanned Progress 89 spacecraft is scheduled for Wednesday, August 14, at 11:20 p.m. EDT (Thursday, August 15, 8:20 a.m. Baikonur time) on a Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

The live broadcast of the launch begins at 11 p.m. on NASA+, NASA Television, the NASA app, YouTube and the agency Website. Learn how to stream NASA+ across multiple platforms, including social media.

After a two-day orbital journey to the station, the spacecraft will autonomously dock with the aft port of the Zvezda service module at 1:56 a.m. on Saturday, August 17. NASA coverage of the rendezvous and docking will begin at 1 a.m. on NASA+, NASA Television, the NASA app, YouTube and the agency Website.

The spacecraft will remain docked at the station for about six months before re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere to dispose of the waste brought by the crew.

The International Space Station is a union of science, technology and human innovation that enables research not possible on Earth. For more than 23 years, NASA has supported a continuous manned U.S. presence aboard the orbiting laboratory, through which astronauts have learned to live and work in space for extended periods of time. The space station is a springboard for the development of a near-Earth economy and for NASA’s next big steps in exploration, including missions to the Moon under Artemis and ultimately human exploration of Mars.
