National home improvement chain closes all stores, including 7 locations in Alabama

The nationwide home improvement chain LL Flooring, formerly Lumber Liquidators, is closing all locations after failing to find a buyer for the chain.

LL Flooring announced in early August that it would file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and close nearly 100 of its 400 stores, including the Tuscaloosa store. However, in a statement released this week, LL said negotiations with “multiple bidders” had failed and that it would now begin “winding down the business to provide the greatest possible value to creditors.”

“This is not the outcome we had hoped for. We are now beginning to wind down operations and are committed to doing so as smoothly as possible to minimize the impact on our employees, customers, suppliers and the communities we serve,” the company said in a statement.

The clearance sales will begin on September 6 and will be completed in about 12 weeks. CNN reported that the closures will cost about 2,000 workers their jobs.

The closed locations in Alabama include Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Pelham and Tuscaloosa.

LL Flooring began about 30 years ago as Lumber Liquidators with a focus on buying and selling excess inventory from other suppliers. After controversy and litigation surrounding some of its products, the company changed its name from Lumber Liquidators to LL Flooring in 2018.

CNN reported that customer orders for flooring were being fulfilled within 30 days, but no new installation dates were being scheduled.
