New England Patriots legend has fascinating views on QB decision

The New England Patriots have decided to use Jacoby Brissett instead of Drake Maye as their starting quarterback. Although this move brought some backlash for head coach Jerod Mayo, some believe he made a wise decision.

Patriots legend Drew Bledsoe is among those who believe Mayo did the right thing.

During an appearance on WEEI’s “Jones and Keefe,” Bledsoe explained his thoughts.

“Philosophically, I like what they’re doing,” Bledsoe said. “It’s largely because of Jacoby Brissett. That guy is a veteran quarterback. He’s played well for a long time and will be a great mentor to Drake. He can win games on short notice, too.”

Bledsoe then drew on his own experience.

“And then, philosophically, I was just thrown in there,” he said. “I felt like I was ready for it. Obviously (Bill) Parcells felt like I was ready for it. There are benefits to just sitting and watching, too. I didn’t learn that until I got injured my rookie year. I got to watch three games, and sitting on the sidelines and watching three games seemed to slow everything down a little bit.”

Bledsoe ended up playing in 13 games and starting 12 times in his rookie season, throwing 15 touchdowns and 15 interceptions while completing only 49.9 percent of his passes.

Perhaps it would have been better for the Patriots to bench Bledsoe in his debut season in 1993.

Bledsoe then made the Pro Bowl in three of his next four seasons and led New England to a Super Bowl appearance in 1996-97 after throwing 27 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

In total, Bledsoe spent nine seasons with the Pats and famously made way for Tom Brady in 2001 after an injury.

The Patriots selected Maye with the third pick in the NFL Draft last April, but they decided to approach him with kid gloves.

New England’s strategy makes sense, especially after the outcome of the Mac Jones issue.

We’ll see if Maye replaces Brissett as starter sometime in 2024.
