New ESPN E60 explores Nebraska’s highly successful women’s volleyball program

No place like Nebraska Premieres Sunday, August 25 at 5:00 p.m. ET on ESPN; extended version streams afterwards on ESPN+

The University of Nebraska, once known only for its football program, has become a mecca for women’s volleyball. Under coach John Cook, anything less than winning a national championship is a disadvantage.

With unprecedented access to players and coaches, a new episode of ESPN E60 follows the Cornhuskers through the 2023 season as they attempt to build on their legacy, not only with record-breaking attendance, but also in pursuit of the ultimate goal of the national championship.

The one-hour No place like Nebraska Premiers Sunday, August 25 at 5 p.m. on ESPN, with an extended version streaming afterward on ESPN+. The show will re-air on ESPN2 at 12:30 a.m.

In August 2023, more than 92,000 fans filled Memorial Stadium in Nebraska – not for a football game, but for a women’s volleyball match at the university. It was a sight that made headlines around the world and made sports history: It was the largest crowd ever to see a women’s sporting event of any kind. For many, the enormous popularity of volleyball in Nebraska was a shock – but for the Cornhuskers, it was nothing new.

With a new world record, five national championships and one of the best recruiting classes in the country, the 2023 Cornhuskers are trying to navigate popularity and success coupled with pressure and expectations. Through a series of in-depth interviews with players, coaches, alumni and locals E60 takes viewers on a journey behind the scenes and accompanies them on a genuine and unfiltered journey through Nebraska – a team without seniors – all the way to the top of the biggest stage.

After the 2023 season, the story continues, as star outside attacker Harper Murray spoke exclusively with E60 about coping with her mental health after an onslaught of hate on social media following the national championship. And after deflecting rampant questions about Murray in the offseason following a public series of off-court incidents, Cook is sitting down with E60 for an open discussion.

In No place like Nebraska, Viewers also hear from other members of Cook’s coaching staff to gain a better understanding of the program, its history and its culture; interviews include assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Jaylen Reyes, assistant coach and former player Kelly Hunter, and director of operations and former Nebraska player Lindsay Peterson.

In addition to Murray, current Cornhusker players were interviewed for the story, including Rebekah Allick and co-captains Merritt Beason and Lexi Rodriguez. Family members include Murray and Allick’s mothers. Longtime volleyball journalist Lincoln Arneal and Nebraska locals round out the story and help detail the decades of passion and excellence for the team and community.

No place like Nebraska was produced and directed by Jennifer Karson-Strauss and Madeline Rundlett.

The ESPN multiplatform presentation includes excerpts from No place like Nebraska presented in segments on Outside the lines In SportsCenter and an accompanying text by Elizabeth Merrill will be published on ESPN.com.

ESPN2 will broadcast the Cornhuskers’ first game of the 2024 season on August 27 at 7 p.m. against Kentucky.
