What is “American food”? What comes to mind when we say “American food”? Honestly, I think of the dishes our parents cooked for us growing up. Pot roast, meatloaf and mashed potatoes, chicken, burgers, steak and potatoes, chicken pot pie, etc.

That sounds like a great list of comfort food that makes my list of the best American dishes. Let’s explore the best of the country and our pick for the Garden State.

According to an article by Love foodthey’ve compiled a list of the BEST places for authentic American food. They’ve got the pick for New Jersey and it’s an iconic Jersey restaurant, a traditional Jersey diner.

According to Lovefood, the New Jersey selection is a famous Jersey diner. Tops Diner in Newark was chosen as the restaurant with the best American food. “Consistently ranked among the most popular in the country, Tops Diner is a New Jersey icon. Serving absolutely massive portions of American classics from the early hours of the morning until late at night, the food is simply impeccable. Popular items on the menu include lobster mac ‘n’ cheese, French toast, buttermilk pancakes, and chicken and waffles for those brave enough to take on a huge plate.”

To find the best beer in each state and Washington DC, Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that collects user reviews of beer in real time. BeerAdvocate makes its decisions by compiling consumer reviews for all 50 states and Washington DC and assigning a weighted ranking to each. The weighted ranking pulls beer toward the average of the list based on the number of reviews and aims to allow lesser-known beers to rise in the rank. Only beers with at least 10 reviews are considered; we went a step further and only included beers with at least 100 user reviews in our gallery.
