New Lane Place pedestrian bridge opens to the public

WASHINGTON, DC (DC News Now)–A pedestrian bridge that was destroyed over three years ago has been reopened to the public.

The Lane Place pedestrian bridge crosses DC 295 and connects Lane Place Northeast and Meade Street.

The old bridge collapsed in June 2021 after being hit by a truck. Since then, people have had to walk hundreds of meters in both directions to get to the other side of the road.

A total of $17 million in disaster relief funds covered the cost of replacing the bridge, which is now higher and safer for trucks to drive under.

“More people will have the opportunity to cross this very, very busy highway,” said Monique Downs, a member of the nearby Zion Baptist Church of Eastland Gardens. “It’s dangerous. And this will reduce all kinds of accidents.”

The new bridge spans both service roads of Kenilworth Avenue, eliminating the need to cross the access roads as was the case with the old design.

There is also new lighting and ramps to improve accessibility.

“I’m glad they reinforced the intersection and built a new one,” said Melanie Gibson, another church member. “It allows people to cross the intersection to get to the subway. It’s definitely needed.”
