A month after the County Board approved a 0.31-acre recreation expansion, Arlington is gathering feedback on planned renovations at Douglas Park.

Renovation plans for the five-acre park in the neighborhood of the same name include replacing a wooden pedestrian bridge, picnic area and fixtures such as picnic tables, park benches and trash cans. The project also aims to improve walkways, improve stormwater management and remove invasive plants.

One outstanding question is whether a steep gravel path near the park’s west entrance on South Stafford Street should be converted to a paved surface or a set of long wooden steps.

An online feedback form also requests suggestions on the possible relocation of the east park entrance to the crosswalk at the corner of S. Quincy Street and 16th Street S.

“This would result in the current mid-block park entrance on S. Quincy St. being blocked off and removed,” the form states. “The concept calls for a new paved path at the 16th St. and S. Quincy St. entrance that connects to the rest of the park.”

The park at 1718 S. Quincy Street is expected to continue to grow after the County Board approved a $1.1 million land purchase in July, which includes the demolition of a residential building at 4030 16th Street S. The Parks and Recreation Department is in charge of coordinating the next steps to incorporate the property into the park.

Respondents have until Friday, September 6 to give their opinion on the proposed renovations. A second round of feedback is scheduled to take place this winter and the project is expected to be completed in winter 2025.
