New restaurants opening in NYC: August 2024

Chelsea: Urban Vegan Kitchen serves seitan skewers, buffalo cauliflower bites and mushroom empanadas. 265 W. 23rd Street, corner of Eighth Avenue

East Village: Saperavi is the rebranding of a space formerly known as Mealz. Now the shop focuses explicitly on Georgian cuisine. 245 E. 14th Street, near Second Avenue

Fort Greene: Glin Thai Bistroa new Thai restaurant has landed on Myrtle Avenue. 330 Myrtle Avenue, near Washington Park

Hamilton Heights: Kitchen Consuelo started during COVID as a supper club in an apartment owned by chef Karina Garcia, a former Eleven Madison Park chef, and her husband Lalo Rodriguez, a former Cosme chef. It later expanded into Smorgasburg, and as of this week, it’s a full-fledged Mexican cafe during the day and dinner at night. The choice of the neighborhood was deliberate, as Garcia grew up there. 130 Hamilton Place, corner of West 143rd Street

Lower East Side: The team behind Mắm and Di An Di have joined forces to Lai Raia wine bar that will launch more snacks this fall. 76 Forsyth Street, between Grand and Hester Street

City center: Scott Sartiano, known for Zero Bond and Sartiano’s, has a new spot called Calvert’s in the Park Lane New York Hotel. It used to be Harry’s New York Bar. 36 Central Park South, on Fifth Avenue

Nolita: Mediterranean Restaurant Boni & Mott is now open: Burrata with beetroot, half a chicken and other staples round out the menu. 238 Mott Street, near Prince Street

Nomad: #12 of 21 places to eat in Omakase, a new spot in Manhattan, is offering a 15-course meal for $120 per person and a 19-course meal for $190. 109 E. 29th Street, near Park Avenue South

Nomad: Temakase hand roll bara shop that sells hand rolls without a tip has opened a second location in Manhattan. 32 W. 28th Street, near Broadway

Upper East Side: Danny Meyers Daily mealshas opened another all-day café and bakery, this time further up town, in the premises previously occupied by Greek restaurant Three Guys. 1381 Madison Avenue, corner of East 96th Street

Upper West Side: Moshe’s Falafelwhich started as a food truck in 1981, has opened a vegan shop in Uptown. 142 W. 83rd Street, corner of Amsterdam Avenue

West Village: What started as a pop-up, Apollo Bagelsby Joey Scalabrino of Pizzeria Leo in Williamsburg, opened earlier this year as a standalone bagel joint in the East Village. Now a successor has opened across town in the West Village. 73 Greenwich Avenue, corner of West 11th Street

West Village: Cha Cha Tanga new spot by Wilson Tang, who helped revive Nom Wah, has premiered in John McDonald’s former Hancock St. McDonald brought Tang along to bring a pop-up version of the concept to the space, which did so well it stayed there, and McDonald has come on as a partner. 257 Sixth Avenue, on Downing Street

West Village: lap is a new vegan wine bar from the long-time owner of Cafe Petisco. 41 Greenwich Avenue, near Charles Street

Williamsburg: Bangkok, Thailanda Thai tasting menu spot, has come to Brooklyn from serial restaurateur Jugkrwut “Jay” Borin, the owner and designer of Mao Mao and Jai Sang Ma in Bushwick. Much like the other restaurants (Mao Mao is designed in the style of an old Thai theater), the interior design is about more than just the choice of tables and chairs: It’s about set design. In this case, that means a space decorated like a bus. 131 Grand Street, near Berry Street

Chinatown: Phoenix Palace was opened on August 1 by a group of friends who grew up in the neighborhood; a jazzed-up sequel from the Potluck Club team. The exterior is designed like a working movie theater and serves dishes like chili crab noodles and other remixed Cantonese-American dishes. 85 Bowery, near Hester Street

Cobblestone Hill: Cafe in the West Village Amano Café has opened a Cobble Hill sister office. 222 Smith Street, corner of Butler Street

Dumbo: Ippudo V, The first vegetarian spot of the ramen shop of the same name has opened in Dumbo. 117 Adams Street, near Pearl Street

Dumbo: Okiboru has opened in Time Out Market, a sister shop to several locations including Okiboru House of Tsukemen on the Lower East Side. The new branch serves vegan or tan tan tsukemen, tori paitan ramen, and cold matcha zaru udon. 55 Water Street, between Dock and Main Street

East Village: Red has opened, a wine bar with Mediterranean tapas such as tomato meatballs, empanadas and burrata with ham. 127 E. Seventh Street, corner of Avenue A

Greenwich Village: Sullalunathe Italian bistro and bookstore (with a focus on illustration and design), has opened its US location. The sister store to the Venice location serves breakfast, brunch and dinner. 41 Carmine Street, corner of Bedford Street

Kingsbridge: Bokaguaa new Dominican Asian restaurant, has opened in the Bronx, replacing a branch of Mamajuana Café. 3541 Riverdale Avenue, near West 236th Street

Lower East Side: Korean chicken chain Don Chickenwith locations throughout New Jersey, has opened on the LES, replacing another Asian chicken place called Chick-In. 205 Allen Street, corner of East Houston Street

Long Island City: Pueblo Querido Coffee Roasters opened on the ground floor of the Sven residential tower. Behind the shop – the fifth location – is Christian Felipe Guzman Herrera, whose focus is on fair trade coffee and Colombian pastries. 29-59 Northern Boulevard, corner 41st Avenue

No, Underground cocktail bar Yawning Cobra is open, with drinks from Sota Kodanka. 356 Bowery on East Fourth Street

Nolita: Pasquale disc is the pizza-by-the-slice lunch option at Pasquale Jones, now open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. A pizza bento – a Sicilian slice, salad, drink and dessert – costs $16, though there are plenty of Neapolitan and Sicilian options as well. There are also sandwiches and salads. Prices range from $5 to $24. 187 Mulberry Street, corner of Kenmare Street

Park Slope: A few decades ago, La Taqueria, founded in 1989, was a staple in the area until its closure. It was reborn as La Taq. 70 Seventh Avenue, near Berkeley Place

View of Lefferts Gardens: PizzaXa pop-up Mexican pizza shop that ran for months at HLopez Market in Astoria has found a more permanent location at a cocktail bar called Pomo. 2122 Beekman Place, on Flatbush Avenue

Times Square: Birdhouse has opened in the Backstage Food Hall, which looks like a Broadway theater, from the owners of Michelin-starred San Francisco restaurant Birdsong: Order from the viral (and, according to Eater critic Robert Sietsema, very good) restaurant Claude the Claw. 245 W. 46th Street, corner of Eighth Avenue

Tribeca: Tea merchant opened its new store last month, a shop for single-origin teas and handmade ceramics. “We plan to expand our offerings throughout the year to include courses, tea ceremonies and exhibitions with our producers,” said owner Stefen Ramirez. 90 Hudson Street, corner of Leonard Street

Upper West Side: A Southern seafood concept has opened in the Food Hall Wonder: Bankside from Chef JJ Johnson behind Fieldtrip, includes grab-and-go options like southern beans and rice, peel-and-eat shrimp, po’boys, grilled sea bass, brown butter corn and cornbread. 2030 Broadway, between West 69th and 70th Street

Washington Heights: Florida Chain Talking about tacos has opened with a menu featuring unconventional tacos, burritos and quesadillas, as well as birria ramen and pizza. 4179 Broadway, at 176th Street

Williamsburg: Honky-tonk bar in Los Angeles Desert 5 Spot landed in Brooklyn with a mechanical bull. 94 Wythe Avenue, corner of North 11th Street
