New scam in Texas Panhandle involving Walmart and gift cards

New scam in Texas Panhandle involving Walmart and gift cards

Another day, another scam in the Texas Panhandle. This time, the scammers are stepping up their game and using a name we all know. It’s a store many of us visit several times a month. Scammers are now trying to lure you in through Walmart. If you’ve seen this letter in Canyon, Texas, it’s a scam.

Canyon, Texas scam involves gift cards and Walmart

The Canyon Police Department has released a photo of a letter recently received by people in Canyon, asking them to participate in an assessment at the local Walmart. The letter promises compensation for participation, an amount of money that any of us would like to have in the bank.

The letter promises compensation of around $450 for purchasing $1,500 worth of Apple gift cards. It even includes a cashier’s check that you can deposit at the bank to complete your task. If you complete the task within 48 hours, you’ll receive a $200 bonus. Not bad for a day’s work.

If it unfortunately sounds too good to be true… well, you know the rest.

The largest collection of warning signals in your mailbox

First, the bank check is fake. This is really annoying, but it shouldn’t be a surprise. No one is going to send a stranger a check for that amount and expect them to do anything other than deposit it in the bank and leave it there.

Second, the entire letter is written in such a way that the only reasonable reaction to reading it is to wonder what you just read. It barely makes any sense, and some parts are weirdly wonderful. For example, as part of your assignment, you have to criticize certain aspects of the store. I don’t know about you, but I’m not sure what the state of the toilet has to do with buying gift cards. The whole thing gets weirder with each sentence.

As you can see from the Canyon Police Department post above, if you ever receive a check and then are asked to purchase gift cards, you should contact the police to see if the offer is legitimate. The best bet is usually that it is a scam. If you live in one of the cities near Canyon, Texas, keep an eye on your mailbox.
