New York Liberty legend breaks WNBA record in Brooklyn

BROOKLYN-New York Liberty fans once again cheered Tina Charles’ rebound on Thursday night at the Barclays Center.

With her third rebound in a Thursday night game at Barclays Center, former New Yorker Tina Charles became the WNBA’s all-time leading rebounder. She finished the first half of the showdown with the Liberty with 4,013 in her career, overtaking Sylvia Fowles for the most rebounds in Association history and wasted no time in defending her title.

This continues the brilliant return to the WNBA court of Charles, a Queens native who did not participate in the league’s 2023 season. Charles made a name for himself on the national level at Christ the King High School in Queens and later won two national championships at the University of Connecticut.

Charles played six seasons (2014-19) with the Liberty before being traded to Washington in 2020. She remains the franchise’s all-time leading scorer (3,739) and rebounder (1,723), two of several records she continues to hold in New York.

“This is where it all started for me, I was born and raised here and I’ve played in every corner of New York,” Charles said ahead of New York’s clash with Atlanta in June. “It’s great, but especially for the people who have helped me get to this level in my career, family, friends, coaches, teammates. I’m really blessed, really lucky.”

Later in Thursday’s game, Charles will break another record she shares with Fowles: After scoring eight points and nine rebounds in the first 20 minutes, Charles will set another WNBA record with her 195th double-double.

Atlanta leads New York 43-30 at halftime. A win would put Charles and the Dream in eighth and final place in the WNBA playoff standings and set them up for a first-round series with the top-seeded Liberty that begins Sunday.
