New York Mobile ID reaches 100,000 users and optimizes airport security

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that over 100,000 New Yorkers have enrolled in the New York Mobile ID program, a secure digital version of state-issued identification cards that increases user convenience and security, particularly at airport security checkpoints.

Launched in June, the New York Mobile ID (MiD) allows users to carry a digital version of their driver’s license, learner’s permit or non-driver’s license on their smartphone. This voluntary digital ID is available for both iOS and Android devices and has quickly gained popularity due to its ease of use and increased security. “We are pleased that so many New Yorkers have downloaded the Mobile ID app,” said Governor Hochul, emphasizing the tool’s role in making travel smoother and safer.

The MiD is accepted at nearly 30 TSA security checkpoints nationwide, including all terminals at LaGuardia and JFK airports, allowing New Yorkers to quickly and securely verify their identity. The state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is also working to expand MiD acceptance in various sectors, including car dealerships, bars, restaurants and financial institutions.

The New York Mobile ID was designed with privacy in mind and meets strict international personal identification standards. Users can unlock the app with Face ID, TouchID, or a secure PIN, ensuring that personal information is encrypted and shared only with the user’s consent. As the DMV continues to work to expand use of the app, New Yorkers are encouraged to download and register their MiD through the App Store or Google Play to take advantage of this convenient and secure digital ID solution.
