Nick Castellanos and Bryce Harper criticize Rays pitcher after incident while clearing the bench

Philadelphia Phillies stars Nick Castellanos and Bryce Harper criticized Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Edwin Uceta after an incident in which he cleared the benches in the bottom of the eighth inning of Philadelphia’s 9-4 victory at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday.

Uceta entered the game with one out and two runners on base, but then gave up a two-run double, an RBI single and a two-run home run before allowing a double to Harper. On the first pitch of the ensuing at-bat, Uceta hit Castellanos in the back with a 96-mph sinker.

Castellanos threw his hands in the air in frustration and yelled at Uceta. Harper approached the Rays reliever from second base to confront him before being mobbed by two Rays. Then the benches cleared.

After the game, Castellanos told reporters that he could tell from Uceta’s growing frustration on the mound that he was about to get hit.

“I can’t explain it,” Castellanos said. “I know he had pretty good numbers when he did that. Just watching, I could see him getting frustrated and digging in. I thought to myself, ‘I’m going to take this pitch here and see if it’s anywhere near the plate.'”

“And it wasn’t near me.”

Castellanos said the Phillies “all felt” that Uceta was frustrated because his “ERA was through the roof.”

Uceta entered the game with a 0.75 ERA, but that rose to 1.49 after he was credited with three earned runs.

Castellanos then compared Uceta’s behavior to that of his two-year-old son.

“You throw a baseball at over 90 miles an hour and you get frustrated and throw it at someone,” Castellanos said. “It’s like my 2-year-old throwing a tantrum because I took away his dessert before he finishes it.”

Harper told reporters that Uceta’s actions were inconsistent with “the game we’re playing.”

“He hit him on purpose,” Harper said. “That’s not the game we play. That’s not what it should be. Guys throw too hard these days. You get mad because a guy hits a home run against you or you blow the lead, let the guy walk and get out of the game. What do you do? That’s just the situation.”

“The whole thing really made me angry and really upset. This is just not something that should be accepted in Major League Baseball.”

The Phillies and Rays play the final game of the three-game series on Wednesday at 6:40 p.m. ET.
