Nick Sirianni admits the Eagles played sloppily, but was glad they held on

The Philadelphia Eagles were able to secure a win against the Packers on Friday night, and before the team headed to the airport, head coach Nick Sirianni spoke to reporters about the game and the incredible atmosphere.

“Brazil! Thank you! What an incredible atmosphere for a football game. Again, I miss The Linc, I miss our fans at The Linc, but Brazil, I mean, wow. That was incredible, and it was a great, great, great atmosphere. It felt like a playoff atmosphere, and that’s not – your fans, the people of Brazil, that was something incredible, and we really appreciate that. We appreciate the hospitality, we appreciate the support of the fans – it was a little louder than I wanted it to be when the Green Bay Packers came out (he said with a smile), but, people of Brazil, that was, wow.”

Sirianni admitted that they had to switch to silence because of the crowd noise, which was loud for most of the game. He thought the game would end that way, so they practiced for that possibility.

Here is what the head coach had to say:

On the overall performance of the teams

Sirianni was asked if this win, while good, felt a bit like some of the victories last season. The head coach laughed at the comparison, pointing out that it’s hard to win games in the NFL, especially those after a 10-hour flight — and he acknowledged that the Packers had to make the flight, too. It was obvious that the question annoyed him.

“It was a good, good win against a good, good opponent.”

He also expressed his respect for Packers head coach Matt LaFleur and quarterback Jordan Love, and praised the Green Bay Packers’ really strong defense.

“What I’m really proud of, Jeff (McLane of the Inquirer) – it was sloppy, it was definitely sloppy, and both sides looked like they were sloppy, but we were able to get through some dark moments as a football team. Some good things happened in that game, some bad things happened in that game, and our guys just kept coming back.”

Sirianni said they will enjoy this journey and not every game in Week 1 is easy, but they will enjoy the win and continue to work on the mistakes that need to be corrected.

On Jalen Hurts’ performance

The head coach was asked how the quarterback recovered from the turnovers, and Sirianni admitted that overall they couldn’t have played a much worse first quarter offensively, but then they got back on the field and Hurts hit Saquon Barkley with an incredible throw. Of course, Hurts will want some of those throws back, but Sirianni said they can also help him a little more on some plays.

“I thought he responded well – like that four-minute drive we had. That drive started with eight minutes left and we gave them the ball back with 27 seconds left. Why? Because Jalen (Hurts) and DeVonta (Smith) made some great plays. That’s tough football. Four-minute football is tough football and our guys really responded.”

About Saquon Barkley’s Eagles debut

“We’re so excited to have him here and he made some great plays all game long. He was successful in the passing game, he made the best plays in the running game.”

Sirianni further noted that Barkley made some great plays in crucial moments and of course scored a ton of touchdowns. He said it means a lot to have the RB on the team, not only because of his talent, but also because of his leadership qualities and positive energy.

On the performance of the defense

The head coach criticized the slow start of the offense, but praised the fast and aggressive defense from the beginning.

“To play as poorly as we did offensively and to be down 6-0 right at the start of the game is pretty impressive. And hats off to the defense.”

Don’t get me wrong, we still have some things to fix on both sides of the football, but we could have been down two points right away, but the defense did a really good job of playing good red zone defense.”

Sirianni said he is excited about the new coordinators – Vic Fangio and Kellen Moore – and couldn’t be happier with how things are going, calling them a real hit.

He was asked about Quinyon Mitchell’s debut and Sirianni said the moment never seems too big for the rookie. Given her conversations with Mitchell’s college coach – who was also Sirianni’s college roommate – the Eagles head coach isn’t surprised by the CB’s move to the NFL.
