Nicole Kidman‘s mother, Janelle Ann Kidmanhas died.
Nicole, 57, confirmed her mother’s death in a statement read by Babygirl director Halina Reijn during a panel at the Venice International Film Festival. (Kidman left the red carpet event early in light of the news.)
“Today I arrived in Venice and shortly after learned that my wonderful, brave mother Janelle Ann Kidman has just died,” Reijn, 38, read on Kidman’s behalf on Saturday, September 7. “I am in shock and I need to go to my family, but this award is for her. She shaped me, she guided me and she made me.”
The statement continued: “I am beyond grateful to be able to share her name with all of you through Halina. The collision of life and art is heartbreaking and my heart is broken.”
Reijn then added: “We love you all, Nicole.”
The Dream couple Star won the award for best actress at the film festival for her role in Baby, girl.
The cause of death for Janelle has not yet been confirmed, a spokesman for the Oscar winner said We weekly that the news “broke her heart.”
“The family is heartbroken and asks for privacy at this time,” said Kidman’s spokeswoman Us in a statement.
Nicole had previously indicated that her mother was in poor health.
“We’re here (in Australia) primarily to look after my mom and surround her with her grandchildren,” Nicole said on NPR’s “Fresh Air” podcast in January 2022. “Fortunately, yesterday, even though (COVID-19 strain) Omicron is raging in this country, we were able to take her to the gallery after work and show her the Matisse exhibition, which for me as a mom who raised me in the arts, was very, very – it was a soothing treat.”
Nicole lives with her husband, a country singer, in Down Under Keith Urbanand her teenage daughters Sunday, 15, and Faith, 13. (Nicole is also mother of two adult children with her ex-husband Tom Cruise.)
Nicole has long been grateful to her mother for her support in her new role as a mother and actress.
“She gave me the fire to pursue my career because I always wanted to please her,” Nicole told the Sydney Morning Herald in a 2020 profile. “But she also forged her own path and wanted her daughters to have the same opportunity to follow their own path.”
The Big little lies Alum continued, “Mom didn’t necessarily have the career she wanted, but she was determined that her daughters would have the same opportunities. That gave me my life. And she gave me my life, her and my dad.”
