The 2024 season for Florida State is a disaster.

The No. 10 Seminoles are now 0-2 after a 28-13 home loss to Boston College on Monday night. The Eagles overran and broke through Florida State’s defense for 268 yards, while Florida State’s offense, with new quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, was disappointing for the second week in a row.

FSU got the ball early in the second half after Boston College had built a 14-6 lead. It seemed like a key moment for the Seminoles to storm down the field and either cut the gap to one or tie the game.

Instead, Uiagalelei threw a desperation interception on fourth down. The ball was picked off by Max Tucker and returned to the FSU 7-yard line. Two plays later, Boston College had a 15-point lead.

Florida State showed some life a few minutes later, getting within eight points after a trick play enabled a 29-yard touchdown pass to Kentron Poitier. But FSU’s defense continued to be picked apart by Boston College’s running game. The Eagles responded to FSU’s first touchdown of the night — and the school’s first passing touchdown since the fateful game against North Alabama in 2023 — with an eight-play drive that lasted over four minutes.

The Seminoles couldn’t respond. Uiagalelei hit Poitier for another big gain on FSU’s next drive, but the quarterback was flagged for intentional grounding on the next play and Florida State lost the ball on one down.

Heck, things were so bad for Florida State that, trailing by 15 points with just over six minutes left, it punted the ball to Boston College as the Seminoles faced a fourth-and-20 attempt after offensive lineman TJ Ferguson received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for the shove, prompting a victory dance from Boston College’s Neto Okpala.

Oh, Florida State never got the ball back after the punt either.

It’s hard to say what’s going well for the Seminoles these days. On Monday night, they were all out of form again. Uiagaelei was under constant pressure. At times he was inaccurate. His receivers dropped catchable passes, even though he was accurate. The running game was barely there. The defensive line was stressed. The linebackers were in a blender. The Seminoles committed seven penalties, Boston College one. The list goes on.

It was easy to write off Georgia Tech’s Week 0 loss in Dublin as an exception. Teams with a lot of new faces sometimes struggle in the first game of the season, and long trips can wreak havoc. However, many of the issues that came up against the Yellow Jackets continued against Boston College. Florida State is a football team with major weaknesses right now.

The beauty of the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff is that it gives teams that started the season poorly a chance to play for the national title if they improve throughout the season. But this isn’t a normal 0-2 start. Florida State is the fourth team in the last decade to start the season 0-2 after being ranked in the top 10 of the AP Top 25 the previous season. And both of those losses are conference losses.

For most teams, an 0-2 start doesn’t have much of an impact on conference contention. Thanks to a unique schedule, Florida State now has to make up ground on the other 17 teams in the ACC to even reach the conference title game and have a chance at the playoffs.

Do you trust Florida State to do that right now? We certainly don’t. And we’re one of many who had FSU as the ACC preseason champion and among the teams in the 12-team postseason.

Boston College has already won one significant victory in the Bill O’Brien era. The former Houston Texans head coach and Alabama offensive coordinator was hired as the Eagles’ head coach earlier this year after Jeff Hafley left to become defensive coordinator with the Green Bay Packers.

O’Brien was in top form early on against the Seminoles, as BC gained a lot of ground through creative plays. But the Eagles’ biggest blow to Florida State was on the offensive and defensive lines.

“We won the game on offense and established the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball,” O’Brien said after the game on SportsCenter.

Playing at the lines is a big plus for a Boston College team seeking its first eight-win season since 2009. The Eagles were picked in the bottom half of the ACC to begin the season and play No. 11 Missouri and Michigan State in Weeks 3 and 4, following a game against FCS opponent Duquesne on Saturday. Given what we saw Monday night, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Boston College hang with Missouri for a while and beat Michigan State.
