No. 20 VB defeats Hawaii

WACO, Texas – The 20th-ranked Baylor volleyball team earned a 3-1 win over Hawaii on Saturday night at the Ferrell Center.

The Bears (8-3) secured the victory in four sets against Rainbow Wahine (6-4). They won the first set 25-14, followed by a victory for Hawaii 25-21. Baylor got revenge with a victory in the third set 25-14 and took the match victory 25-17 in the fourth set.

THE RUNDOWN
Sentence 1

The bears came ready to fight with a kill of Andreas and made a three-point run right at the start. Elise McGhee continued the momentum with another kill, bringing Baylor to 4-2. Kendal Murphy also added a kill to make it 6-5 for the Bears. Hawaii couldn’t stop Andrew’s deadly kill, followed by McGhee’s ace, making the score 11-10 for the Bears. Allie Sczech turned on the Jets with a block and then a kill, making the score 14-12 Bears. Murphy didn’t let up with another great kill and another point for Baylor. After a timeout Jackie Barrett Frazier kept things going with a kill, putting Baylor up 17-12. Manuela Bibinbe Kill continued the five-point streak. Bibinbe wasn’t done yet, however, as she continued with a block next to Barrett Frazier to make it 21-14 for the Bears. A kill by McGhee brought the Bears to set point and then to the set win, which ended 25-14.

Sentence 2

Baylor came into the second set ready to dominate again with McGhee’s first set point. Murphy retaliated against UH’s lead with a kill, bringing the score to 4-3 Hawaii. Bibinbe continued to fight with a powerful kill, bringing the score to 5-4 Bows. Murphy heated up with two service aces, breaking the tie, putting Baylor within 8-6. A kill from McGhee halted Hawaii’s 3-point streak, bringing the score to 12-10 Hawaii. Murphy was able to add another kill to her resume, fighting for Baylor at 14-12 Hawaii. Sczech and Bibinbe continued the kills as the teams went back and forth, cutting the set to 16-14 Hawaii. Bibinbe couldn’t stop, scoring another kill and an ace, cutting the gap to 17-16 Hawaii. A kill by Andrew and an ace by Barrett Frazier brought the set into an intense tie at 18-18. Murphy kept Baylor alive with a kill to put Hawaii up 22-20. The set was decided 25-21 in Hawaii’s favor.

Sentence 3

With the score tied 1-1 in the third set, the Bears got the first point with a kill from McGhee. McGhee continued the momentum with another kill and Szcech continued the winning streak. McGhee wasn’t done yet, however, as she scored an ace to bring the score to 4-1 for the Bears. Murphy was in with three consecutive kills to win, putting Baylor up 8-3 and forcing the Bows to call a timeout. A block from Bibinbe and McGhee put the Bears ahead 10-5. McGhee then scored two consecutive kills. Andrew jumped in with a kill to put Baylor up 14-9. Sczech continued the fight with a kill to bring the score to 15-10 for the Bears. Murphy decided she wasn’t done yet as she scored more consecutive kills in the set. In addition to the errors on Hawaii’s part, this gave Baylor an 8-1 run to set point. A kill from McGhee brought home the victory in the third set with a score of 25-14.

Sentence 4

Baylor came out hot after winning the set, taking the first two points in the 4th with an ace from Bibinbe and a kill from McGhee. Andrew decided to jump on the bandwagon of back-to-back kills, bringing Baylor to 4-1. Murphy got another kill to bring Baylor to 8-3. McGhee returned the favor with a powerful kill for Hawaii, bringing the score to 12-8 for Baylor. Andrew continued to get kills and points, bringing Baylor to 14-10. A block from Bibinbe brings the set to 17-15 for Baylor. Tehani Ulufatu brought an incredible ace to Hawaii. Bibinbe comes back with another block next to Murphy, putting the score at 19-15. Murphy stays hot with two kills to bring Baylor to 21-16. Bibinbe isn’t done yet as she makes another block next to McGhee and then captures a solo block, helping Baylor to get to 23-16. Bibinbe then brings the set to match point by making a kill. The crowd erupted in cheers as Baylor took the match win after a kill from McGhee, sealing the deal at 25-17.
