CAMBY, Indiana – The Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that the shooting of an Indianapolis man in June was ruled self-defense.
On June 2, 2024, at approximately 1:44 p.m., officers responded to a call that a person had been shot at the Camby Walmart Supercenter. There they found Matthew Steele, 34, with a gunshot wound to the upper torso next to a vehicle in the parking lot. Steele, who was from Indianapolis, was taken to IU Health Methodist in critical condition, where he later died.

Officers arrested and questioned a 19-year-old man involved in the shooting. Preliminary reports indicate there was a verbal and physical altercation between the two men before a firearm was drawn and fired.
After investigating the shooting, Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office officials said they found evidence of self-defense. The district attorney declined to file charges.
