Northern Iowa vs. Hawaii – Predictions and Best Bets

Northern Iowa vs. Hawaii – Predictions and Best Bets

The Panthers and Rainbow Warriors have had trouble getting their offense going so far, and things won’t go smoothly in Week 4 either.

The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors host the Northern Iowa Panthers in the Week 4 finale. NIU’s new Air Raid offense got off to a rocky start and Hawaii’s run-and-shoot offense isn’t looking any better.

For these and other reasons, my predictions for Northern Illinois vs. Hawaii tonight are biased towards the Under. Read all about it in my college football picks for Saturday, September 21.

Prediction for Northern Iowa vs. Hawaii

My best bet
Under 48.5 (-110 at bet365)

My analysis
There’s no other way to say it – the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors have been a disappointing team over their last three games. In the third year of the Timmy Chang era, there was cautious optimism about the program with his system fully in place and seven starters returning on both sides of the ball.

So far, they have shown no improvement from last year. Hawaii struggled to a 35-14 win over a terrible Delaware State team in Week 0, never coming close to the 40.5-point margin. Most recently, they were crushed 31-13 by Sam Houston State.

The Northern Iowa Panthers are ranked 25th in the Stats Perform FCS poll and most recently lost to Nebraska in a non-competitive game, 34-3. Mark Farley is in his 24th year leading the program and working with a new group of assistants after restructuring his staff following three consecutive six-win seasons.

Farley wants to implement the Air Raid offense and brings in Luke Falk – a former quarterback of Mike Leach – in the offseason. Falk had to resign in July and Farley hired another former quarterback of Leach, Trey Tinsley.

So far, the Air Raid hasn’t gotten anything from the road, averaging 18.3 points per game and 371 yards per game. Quarterback Aidan Dunne is completing just 52% of his passes and this offense appears to be in transition.

One thing to watch out for is the weather – the current forecast calls for wind speeds of 30 km/h – which bettors have become accustomed to at games at the Clarence TC Ching Athletics Complex.

Neither team has shown much to be confident about this year, and both quarterbacks are completing less than 54% of their passes. Both teams look better defensively, with NIU allowing just 17 points per game and Hawaii ranking 43rd in completion percentage.

Neither team is giving many buy signals, but at least there are some more positive things to report about Hawaii. The Rainbow Warriors stayed close with a Big Ten school, even if it was a bad one, losing to UCLA by three points. They didn’t play well against Sam Houston State, but the Bearkats were a stunner.

NIU lost 8.8 yards per play to Nebraska and gained just 4.2 yards per play. Losing 4.6 yards per play doesn’t inspire much confidence, especially when Nebraska went on to lose at home to Illinois despite being a 9.5-point favorite.

Hawaii is in the third year of its system and has played well on defense, while NIU is in the early stages of a difficult transition on offense and was narrowly defeated in one of its wins in a tough 17-10 contest against St. Thomas.
