Not just for tricks, urban planning skate park improvements in Central Oahu

Not just for tricks, urban planning skate park improvements in Central Oahu

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – More kickflips and less crime.

This is the goal of the planned expansions and improvements to the skate parks in the Wahiawa and Mililani District Parks.

The city, in collaboration with the Hooulu Wahiawa community group, hosted a public meeting at Wahiawa District Park on Tuesday evening.

Officials asked for suggestions on what changes could be made.

Two further meetings will be scheduled to discuss the feasibility of the proposed changes.

One park visitor believes that if children had more space to play safely, they would be less tempted to participate in illegal activities.

“If there are five people there, it’s crowded,” Nathan Nahina said of the skate park in Wahiawa District Park. “I see some kids like chicken fights, and I feel like some kids get caught doing that.”

Mililani District Park is set to have $20,000 worth of new lights installed in September.

The electrical contractor A-1 A-Lectrician, Inc. is donating the materials and labor.

Due to work to install the eight 40-foot-tall lights, the Mililani Skatepark will be closed from September 9-21.

A neighborhood council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday evening to discuss further plans in Mililani.
