Not to be missed at ADCC: Mica Galvão could have the best entry this week

Not to be missed at ADCC: Mica Galvão could have the best entry this week

The race for the 2024 Grappler of the Year is expected to be decided on August 17-18 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas during the 2024 ADCC World Championship.

And it is fair to say that Mica Galvão is currently leading this race and can pull away if he wins in the 77 kg weight class.

“Mica is trying to do something that has only been done once before,” said FloGrappling analyst and reporter Joe Gilpin. “He’s trying to become the second person to win all four IBJJF Majors and an ADCC World Title in the same year.”

The other person to do this was Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles, who is considered one of the greatest wrestlers of all time.

Galvão won all of his fights in IBJJF Brasileiro in a split second. He dominated the field at the IBJJF Worlds and is the current WNO Welterweight World Champion.

In short: he only won this year.

That’s why no BJJ fan should miss a second of Mica Galvão’s ADCC 2024 run.

Mica Galvão could win the best ADCC entry

It wasn’t long before Galvão’s name came up when Gilpin was asked who could provide the best contribution to the ADCC.

It’s just part of Galvão’s style.

“I would expect Mica Galvão in his first few fights to try to come out, put on a show and get off the mat very quickly,” Gilpin said. “I think for him and his style and being able to stay explosive by not having long fights, that really benefits him.”

Galvão may have landed one of the most impressive submissions of 2023 against PJ Barch at WNO 20, and Gilpin said this could be a preview of what fans will see in the -77 kg class.

“I think he’s someone who has put on some really incredible performances,” Gilpin said. “He’s a very submission-oriented grappler who goes from his feet to the ground and has a very good command of a submission. There’s no better example than his flying armbar at WNO 20 against PJ Barch.”

“I think if you want to see someone who approaches submissions dynamically, he’s definitely one to keep an eye on,” Gilpin added.

Mica Galvão is only 20 years old and is about to make BJJ history

When Cobrinha completed the IBJJF Grand Slam and then won the ADCC World Championship – during which he won three consecutive ADCC World Championship titles in the -66 kg class from 2013 to 2017 – that was the end of his career.

Cobrinha was 37 when he accomplished this feat.

“For Mica, this is just the beginning of his career,” Gilpin said of the 20-year-old. “He will spend 2024 establishing himself as probably the best pound-for-pound fighter, regardless of his style, if he is able to do so.”

“This is a stunning display of dominance for someone who is still at the very beginning of his grappling career.”
