NYC Parks Dept. installs state-of-the-art smart basketball hoop in Tompkins Square Park in Manhattan’s East Village

EAST VILLAGE, Manhattan (WABC) — A revolutionary new technology promises to change the way future generations of basketball players train and play.

It is a smart basketball hoop called “The Huupe” that has features to help players improve their game: from precise shot tracking to interactive training.

The technology has caught the attention of celebrities and NBA players.

And now it’s available to New Yorkers for free in one of the city’s most popular parks.

New York City Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue, Huupe founders Paul Anton and Lyth Saeed, and community members gathered Thursday to cut the ribbon for the city’s new Huupe in Tompkins Square Park.

The event also included a special basketball seminar where the children learned about and played with the new technology.

The horn will be on display in Tompkins Square Park until early October.

Technology support was made possible by NYC Parks’ Adopt-a-Park program.
