Odds, tips and predictions for Appalachian State vs Clemson

The No. 22 Clemson Tigers (0-1) welcome the Mountaineers of the Appalachian State (1-0) to Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (ACC Network). Below we analyze the odds from FanDuel Sportsbook around the Appalachian State vs Clemson Opportunitiesand give our expert college football picks and predictions.

Clemson is No. 22 in the Survey of LBM trainers in the USA. In Week 1, they were given a nearly impossible task — beat Georgia — and they accomplished everything else. The Tigers lost 34-3 on August 31, underwhelming as 10.5-point underdogs on a neutral court. Clemson started strong, trailing just 6-0 at halftime, but they couldn’t keep up with the Bulldogs’ size and strength in the trenches. They should have an easier matchup in Week 2.

App State, which plays in the Sun Belt, beat Eastern Tennessee State 38-10 on August 31, but failed to win as a 32.5-point favorite. The Mountaineers finished the game with an outstanding 326 yards through the air and another 174 yards on the ground. QB Joey Aguilarwho scored 33 passing touchdowns last season, was the star of the game, completing 22 of 36 passes.

Tips and predictions for Appalachian State vs Clemson

forecast

Clemson 31, App State 24

Money line

HAPPEN.

Clemson (-820) is way too expensive, especially given their poor performance on August 31. App State could be worth a moneyline bet, but the spread is the better value here.

Against the spread

BET APPALACHIAN STATE +16.5 (-105).

The Mountaineers didn’t play well in their first game of the season, but they looked good. They didn’t have an interception or a fumble and played a clean game. App State finished 9-5 last season and 6-2 in conference play. They lost 6-0 to then-No. 17 North Carolina in 2nd overtime on Sept. 9, 2023, and beat top-25 James Madison on Nov. 18. They should continue their success against top opponents.

Clemson was destroyed by Georgia, and QB Cade Klubnik threw for just 142 yards with one interception. He didn’t show enough and the Tigers couldn’t get the running game going. While it’s safe to assume it was against Georgia, he didn’t show enough to suggest he can cover that size of a spread against a capable Sun Belt team.

Take Appalachian State +16.5 (-105).

Over/Under

Bet over 52.5 (-110).

App State scored 38 points in Week 1 and has a second-year quarterback who was in the system last season and plays at a high pace. The team should be able to score against Clemson, a team that gave up 28 points in the second half against Georgia.

The Tigers may be looking for easier competition, and Klubnik threw a total of 7 touchdowns in the two non-Power 4 games Clemson played last season, so expect him to find his rhythm again.

Take OVER 52.5 (-110).
