Officials say the gas station in Chepachet is now without water

A petrol station in Chepachet claims its fuel tanks are free of water after selling tainted petrol earlier this week.

NBC 10 got answers about the contaminated gas on Thursday, but also uncovered some other problems.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Yatco has about 12 outstanding violations, but the company itself said they had nothing to do with this week’s water problems.

Barry Ahern, Yatco’s vice president of retail, spent part of Thursday explaining the situation to NBC 10 and proving that fuel supplies are back to normal.

“I pump gas to show that the quality of our gasoline is good and that we stand behind the quality of the gasoline we sell,” Ahern said.

The gas station on Putnam Pike was criticized Tuesday morning for selling gasoline mixed with water. Ahern traced the problem to a shipment from Shell’s Providence Terminal.

“It was determined that the truck brought the water to us,” Ahern said.

He said the water was only found in the regular gasoline tank, so sales of premium gasoline could continue on Tuesday.

Several drivers who filled up their tanks within a two-hour window experienced problems with their cars and complained to NBC 10.

NBC 10 sought answers from the Department of Emergency Management.

According to DEM, there are problems with the gas supply system at the gas station that need to be fixed. However, there is no evidence that this has caused water to enter the underground tank.

Regarding the water in the gasoline, the DEM visited the gas station on Thursday and confirmed that the gasoline is safe to use.

The gas station uses an automatic tank gauging system to detect water in the system.

Ahern said that when the fuel is delivered, water settles at the bottom of the tank and takes a while to be detected.

He said in this scenario, gas was purchased before they received notification.

Ahern said they had made a change since Tuesday to prevent something like this from happening again.

“Every time a delivery is made, the employee has to go back, print out the receipt and verify that there is no water,” Ahern said.

“If water is discovered, they must call their manager immediately.”

Ahern said they apologized to everyone affected and were working to make things right.

“From the bottom of our hearts, we at Yatco did not intentionally sell this gas to anyone,” Ahern said.

Ahern said the watery gasoline was sold between 4:30 and 6:20 a.m. Tuesday morning.

If you purchased gasoline during this time and encountered problems, Ahern will cover all costs.

You can email the team at [email protected] or stop by the store if you need assistance.

The DEM said it would continue to work with the broadcaster to resolve any violations before next month’s deadline.
