Ohio sheriff suggests residents keep a list of homes with Harris signs

An Ohio sheriff who made derogatory remarks about Vice President Kamala Harris and immigrants on social media suggested that citizens make a list of the addresses where they see signs in their front yards supporting the Democratic presidential candidate.

In a public Facebook post on Friday, Portage County Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski used anti-immigrant rhetoric and condemned both Harris and her supporters.

Portage County Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski.

“When people ask me… What will happen if the swaying, laughing hyena wins?? I say… write down all the addresses of the people who had her signs in their yards! So… if the illegal human ‘locusts’ (who she supports!) need a place to live… we already have the addresses of their new families… who supported their arrival!” the post read.

Zuchowski, the sheriff’s office and the Harris campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday afternoon.

The post shared by Zuchowski also included television images with mentions of Aurora, Colorado, and Springfield, Ohio — cities that have become flashpoints in the immigration debate.

Springfield, in particular, has faced security threats due to baseless claims that Haitian immigrants are living there. Former President Donald Trump reinforced those claims at Tuesday’s presidential debate, which drew more than 67 million viewers, when he said, “They’re eating the pets.”

Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, made similar remarks on social media and reiterated them in an interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press” on Sunday.

Springfield Mayor Rob Rue said “a lie” is tearing the city of nearly 59,000 apart. “We want this to stop,” he said Saturday.

Springfield is located just under 200 miles southeast of Portage County.

Zuchowski’s Facebook page includes a photo of him with Vance, as well as other pictures of him with Trump allies such as former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.

The photo with Vance is from July 15. One of the photos with Flynn is from June 13 and the other is from March 30 and shows Ramaswamy.
