Ohio’s recreational alcohol sales take off: million in revenue reported in first week

Since Ohio officially opened recreational cannabis sales earlier this month, companies have already reported millions in sales.

In the days between August 6, when adult-use pharmacies first opened their doors, and August 10, $11.5 million in sales were reported statewide.

New figures from the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control (DCC) also show that an additional $8.3 million was generated from the sale of medical cannabis during this period.

Nearly 100 cannabis dispensaries in Ohio received the green light to open their doors to the public after state regulators issued the dispensaries a second batch of dual licenses on opening day.

Some stores, such as those run by Curaleaf, Acreage Holdings and Ayr Wellness across Ohio, began selling immediately, while other operators began operations in the following days.

In the first week, 173,043 units of manufactured cannabis products and 1,285 pounds of plant material were sold.

Average prices for plant material rose to $26.59 per 1/10 ounce and $9.40 per gram, representing a significant increase from the previous day’s prices due to increased demand in the newly opened recreational market.

A total of 138,466 transactions were registered in the leisure segment, indicating strong consumer interest.

Ayr Wellness, which has opened three adult-use dispensaries in Woodmere, Goshen and Dayton, said sales have increased more than 200% compared to average sales in the medical-only space.

Recreational sales now account for more than two-thirds of total AYR sales in Ohio, with flower remaining the most popular category.

Curaleaf, which has operated a medical cannabis dispensary in Ohio for some time, also began selling recreational cannabis at its Newark dispensary and also saw a doubling of customer traffic and sales on the first day of recreational sales.

According to MSO, beverages and concentrates performed exceptionally well, with sales three times higher than an average day.
