Here is a recent college football story from AP:

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Houston coach Willie Fritz preferred to take something positive from the Cougars’ 27-7 home loss to UNLV in their season opener.

He acknowledged that his offense failed to protect the quarterback and the defense struggled to stop the run in his debut as Houston’s coach, but saw some things to build on.

“Some guys played well,” he said. “Not a lot of guys played well the whole game, but there were some really good plays.”

Houston will need more than just a few chunks against No. 15 Oklahoma.

The Sooners are currently coming off a dominant defensive performance in a 51-3 win over Temple, recording six turnovers, six sacks and nine tackles for loss.

Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold threw four touchdown passes in his first home game against Temple, including three to Purdue transfer wide receiver Deion Burks.

Sooners coach Brent Venables isn’t going to play Houston on his own. He told reporters that Fritz’s former Tulane teams were 10-0 in real road games the last two years, “so he knows how to prepare his guys.”

Under Fritz in 2021, the Green Wave nearly toppled Oklahoma as a 31.5-point underdog, but lost 40-35 to the second-ranked Sooners after losing the ball on a try near the halfway line in the final minutes.

“Coach Fritz and his staff are known for being well-coached and incredibly disciplined and patient,” Venables said. “They’re going to play a tight game, try to make it to the fourth quarter, try to keep the ball, run it different ways and make their throws. And they’re excellent in the kicking game. Really, really good.”

Houston has a veteran signal-caller in senior Donovan Smith. Against UNLV, he completed just 15 of 30 passes for 135 yards and two interceptions, but Venables thinks he’s dangerous. Venables said the Cougars are capable of getting things done.

“A big, strong running back and again long, explosive receivers and tight ends,” he said. “So this should be a good matchup and certainly an improvement from where we were a week ago.”

Chart-toppers

After one game, Oklahoma leads the nation in fumbles recovered (4) and turnovers gained (6). Individually, freshman defensive lineman Markus Strong led the FBS with two solo sacks he recorded in the last two games against Temple.

Further injuries

Jalil Farooq, the Sooners’ most experienced receiver, broke his foot against Temple and will need surgery. Venables said he expects Farooq to miss at least six weeks. He is the latest receiver to suffer an injury, joining Jayden Gibson, who is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, and Nic Anderson, who missed the opening game with an unspecified injury. “Nic will be back sooner rather than later,” Venables said.

Center Branson Hickman, a transfer from SMU, sprained his ankle in the first quarter and missed the rest of the game. Hickman’s condition is improving, but Venables did not say whether he would play.

Homecoming

Two former Sooners will return to Norman as starters for Houston. LB Jamal Morris, a senior from Houston, led the Cougars with seven tackles, including one for a loss, against UNLV. DB Latrell McCutchin Sr., a junior from Austin, Texas, recorded three tackles against the Rebels.

New arrivals

Twelve Oklahoma players made their first starts for the Sooners against Temple, including seven on offense. Kicker Tyler Keltner, a transfer from Florida State, was named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week. He delivered a perfect performance in his debut, hitting field goals of 50, 42 and 24 yards and all six extra point attempts.

Triple threat

Fritz said Houston could play with three quarterbacks. Smith, Louisiana native Zeon Chriss and Ui Ale all played against UNLV.

Ale completed 7 of 8 passes for 74 yards and scored Houston’s only touchdown, while Chriss played sparingly and did not throw a single pass.
