Medal table | Olympic News
The Olympic Games officially came to a close on Sunday with the closing ceremony at the Stade de France and the push toward the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. The moment gave Paris one last chance to shine on the Olympic stage in a way that only Paris can.
But before the closing ceremony took center stage, the final medals of the 2024 Games needed to be won and awarded, with a series of events taking place on the final day of the Olympics leading up to the ceremony.
Here are some of the best photos from the last day of the Paris Olympics.
Sifan Hassan wins 6th Olympic medal
The women’s marathon kicked things off, with Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan crowned Olympic champion. Hassan’s gold was her third medal at the Games. She also won bronze in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters on the track. Hassan was a two-time gold medalist in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters in Tokyo. In 2021, she also secured bronze in the 1,500 meters.
USA wins gold medal in women’s basketball for the eighth time in a row
It wasn’t easy, but the U.S. women secured their eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal in basketball with a 67-66 victory over host France. The U.S. trailed by 10 points in the third quarter but rallied to secure their 61st consecutive Olympic victory, a streak that began in the bronze medal game at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
Closing ceremony is the focus
After the competition, all Olympic eyes were on the Stade de France, where the athletes opened the closing ceremony with the Parade of Nations.
An artistic performance presented the most spectacular images of the closing ceremony, from a “Golden Voyager” to a grand piano and pianist hanging vertically in the air.
Paris surrenders Los Angeles
Towards the end of the ceremony, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo took the stage along with outgoing International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach to usher in the transition to the 2028 Games.
Afterwards, Hollywood’s most famous stuntman, Tom Cruise, shifted up a gear with a segment full of anticipation for the games in Los Angeles.
