Open thread for Thursday Night Football Week 3, Patriots vs. Jets

Week 3 of the 2024 NFL season begins with the second straight round of AFC East football, this time between the New England Patriots (1-1) and the New York Jets (1-1). Both teams look significantly different than in years past, with the Patriots largely starting fresh on both sides of the ball and the Jets hoping to finally have a competitive season with Aaron Rodgers at the helm.

The Patriots had a difficult offseason and were widely considered the worst team in the AFC before the season. Instead, the defense thrived under new head coach Jerod Mayo and even managed to steal a game from the always slow-starting Bengals. On offense, all eyes are on rookie Drake Maye to take the reins, but experienced Jacoby Brissett has managed the game well and the offense led by Rhamondre Stevenson has been effective.

The Jets, meanwhile, are AFC hopefuls with Aaron Rodgers finally leading the offense. After a Week 1 loss to the 49ers and a hard-fought road win against the Titans, the Jets are still an enigma. There’s no doubt the offense is better with Rodgers at the helm, but there are still issues. The defense doesn’t seem quite as dominant as it has been in years past.

These two teams have a long and storied history, but things might be starting to turn in the Jets’ favor. FanDuel has the Jets as 6.5-point favorites, but with a particularly low over/under of just 38.5. We’re likely to see a tough defensive slugfest in this one. The game kicks off at 8:15 p.m. ET and is only available via streaming on Amazon Prime – unless you live in the New York or New England area, in which case you can watch the game on local channels.
