Opening of the parking lot for Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport

Opening of the parking lot for Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport

The new parking garage for Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport is officially open – just in time for Labor Day weekend.

A ceremonial opening ceremony took place on Wednesday morning.

“We are here to celebrate an important milestone for our construction project,” said Kim Becker, president and CEO of the Regional Airport Authority of San Diego County.

The new parking garage at Terminal 1 will provide travelers with 2,834 new parking spaces, but this is only the first phase of the ongoing airport redevelopment project. According to a press release, parking availability at the airport will increase to nearly 8,500 spaces when phase two is completed in late summer 2025.

“We really thought about sustainability when designing and building our new Terminal 1 parking lot,” said Brendan Reed, senior director of operations planning and readiness.

Reed showed 10News around and showcased the square’s sustainability features, such as storm drains that collect rainwater to be cleaned and reused on-site.

“When the new Terminal 1 opens at the end of next summer, we will actually be able to flush the toilets with collected rainwater,” Reed said.

The site also has designated spaces for “clean vehicles” and electric vehicles, complete with charging stations.

And there’s good news: There are still plenty of spots available for the upcoming Labor Day weekend.

“Our peak days will be Thursday and Sunday night into Monday,” said Becker.

The airport is expecting 75,000 passengers per day during the holidays. Officials are asking passengers to allow enough time.

The cost for the new parking garage is $38 per day, but travelers can also pay by the hour.

The airport also recommends making a parking reservation online. There is a limited-time promotional code for online customers: T1PPNEW10.
