‘Orange Man’ Trump will jail protesters, Jane Fonda claims at Harris event for voters abroad

‘Orange Man’ Trump will jail protesters, Jane Fonda claims at Harris event for voters abroad

Actress and environmental activist Jane Fonda once again addressed her audience abroad, warning Democratic voters abroad that if re-elected, former President Donald Trump will “lock up” anyone who protests his policies.

“If you’re young and living abroad, you’re going to want to vote so you have a future worth living. And you’re going to want to vote so you have a voice in a democracy. With Harris as the candidate, you now have a voice. If you want something to happen or not, you can lobby. You can protest, demonstrate, you can do all kinds of things,” Fonda said Thursday afternoon during a Democrats Abroad campaign rally for the Harris-Walz candidate.

“The Orange Man will not allow that. He puts people who disagree with him in jail and he has said he will make life difficult for them,” Fonda continued before a campaign moderator interjected that her next speaker, Senator Ed Markey, would speak at the virtual event.

Democrats Abroad is the official arm of the Democratic Party for U.S. citizens living abroad. It registers them as voters and informs them about important political issues during election periods. According to the Federal Voting Assistance Program, approximately three million U.S. citizens live and vote abroad.

The group held an hours-long campaign rally via Zoom on Thursday afternoon, where a host of Democratic elected officials and members of Hollywood’s elite spoke with people living abroad about why they support the Harris-Walz ticket.

DONALD TRUMP PRAISED BY STARS AS A ‘WARIOR’, A MAN ‘WILLING TO GIVE HIS LIFE’ AFTER THE ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT

Hollywood stars such as Kyra Sedgewick, Rob Reiner, Alfre Woodard and Fonda, as well as elected officials such as former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, former Attorney General Eric Holder and Representative Adam Schiff, addressed the audience with brief speeches, urging them to defeat Trump at the ballot box.

“One of the main reasons … why this election is so critical next November is because one of the two leading candidates – and I don’t think I need to name the names – is going to take us in absolutely the wrong direction. I would say the Orange Man. OK, the Orange Man has let us know in no uncertain terms that on day one if he is elected, it will be ‘drill, baby, drill.’ And as I said, the world cannot afford to ignore the climate crisis for another four years. It will be too late to solve this existential crisis. We need a strong democracy. And the Orange Man has also let us know that he is not crazy about democracy,” Fonda continued in her remarks.

Pelosi also criticized Trump, but preferred to call the 45th president “what’s his name again” and argued that “our democracy is at stake” in this election cycle. She added that she was thankful to God that she was serving as Speaker of the House and not a Republican lawmaker on January 6, 2021, when Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol.

“I want to say this immodestly, but I was very glad that God chose me to be speaker last time on January 6th. Because if it had been a Republican speaker, the whole story would be different now. So Hakeem Jeffries has to be speaker of the House on January 6th. That’s a must. It’s up to you. No burden, it’s just up to you,” Pelosi said.

Former Obama administration Attorney General Eric Holder also addressed viewers, arguing that Trump’s political statements and policies during the 2024 campaign were “appalling.”

“They’ve put up with everything from gerrymandering to voter suppression to outright intimidation. And that’s profoundly un-American. Earlier this summer, Donald Trump asked some of his MAGA supporters and spoke to some MAGA supporters. He told them they only have to vote this one time. Just vote this one time. And then he said they don’t have to do that anymore. That’s a pretty terrifying thing,” Holder said.

For Hope, it was the first gubernatorial election in which she was able to vote for her father.

Holder joined the Harris campaign earlier this year to lead the selection process of her potential running mate before Minnesota Governor Tim Walz was announced as the candidate last month.

September is a crucial month for American voters abroad because federal law requires that mail-in ballots be sent to military members and overseas voters 45 days before the election. In this election cycle, the ballots will be sent by September 21.
