When is the best time to buy an iPhone?

Next Monday, Apple will be presenting its new iPhones, and you can pre-order them shortly afterward. But if you wait a little longer, you can save a lot of money, because experience shows that the devices will probably soon be significantly cheaper.

Anyone considering buying an iPhone 16 will probably be able to pre-order it on the day of the premiere. But a few weeks or months of patience could pay off. The prices are not yet known, but when Apple presents the new iPhone 16 models on September 6, it is unlikely that they will cost less than the current devices. The cheapest 15 launched a year ago for around 950 euros, the cheapest Pro for just under 1200 euros.

In the Apple Store itself, prices will remain stable at least until the successor is released. But according to Guenstiger.de, third-party online retailers have in the past attracted customers with discounts quite early after the iPhones were introduced.

Price drop for the small Normalo

The comparison portal analyzed the price development of Apple’s current smartphones and found that the normal models in particular were available for less shortly after their market launch, while it took a little longer for the Pro models. This was probably due to the greater demand for the top duo, while the two standard 15-inch models needed a boost, according to reports.

According to the analysis, the prices for the small basic version fell by over 100 euros to 835 euros after just one month, which corresponds to a loss of twelve percent. After four months, the 20 percent mark was even broken and buyers of an iPhone 15 still had to shell out 730 euros.

The price of the iPhone 15 Plus, which started at just under 1100 euros, did not drop as sharply or as quickly as its little brother. In the first four weeks after the premiere, it dropped by eight percent. Another month later, the large standard device was offered for 975 euros, which corresponds to a disadvantage of eleven percent. Only after six months did the prices drop by over 20 percent to 872 euros.

Pro-Duo over 20 percent cheaper after seven months

The Pro Duo was able to keep the free online price stable in the first month. After two months, however, the smaller version was offered at a price that was ten percent cheaper, while the Max cost nine percent less.

Those who were patient a little longer could save a lot of money: From the seventh month onwards, the two Pro variants were 22 percent cheaper than their starting prices. For the iPhone 15 Pro, you had to invest 935 euros instead of 1200, and the Pro Max only cost 1130 euros instead of 1450.

Guenstiger.de believes that the time around the so-called “Black Friday” on November 29th could be a good opportunity for an iPhone 16 bargain. Last year, however, that was hardly the case for the newcomers, but the predecessors were sometimes significantly cheaper. The magazine has to do with the promotional day for Christmas shopping that originally came from the USA. Above all, however, the same thing was true then as it is now: when new iPhones come out, the prices of the previous year’s models drop.

If you wait longer than twelve months, you’ll probably get an iPhone 16 for even less. But at some point, you’ll reach the point where it’s no longer worth buying an older Apple smartphone. The technology may remain top-notch for a long time, but after five or six years, the devices will no longer receive operating system updates. And some new features may no longer be available sooner. You should always take this into account.
