Overheard outside Michigan State’s locker room: Fighting back with some meat on the bone

Overheard outside Michigan State’s locker room: Fighting back with some meat on the bone

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland – For the second week in a row, Michigan State found itself in a neck-and-neck game late in the fourth quarter.

This time, the Spartans didn’t try to wait for a win to avoid an upset, but instead they fought together and got one.

Michigan State (2-0, 1-0, Big Ten) scored ten points in the final five minutes, including a game-winning 37-yard field goal by Jonathan Kim with one second left, to secure a 27-24 victory at Maryland (1-1, 0-1) on Saturday.

Here are notable quotes from coach Jonathan Smith and the players after the win:

“Hopefully this will give us some confidence and strength that this isn’t over until we get clean sheets and have the ability to finish games.”

– Smith on the Spartans closing in on victory on the road.

“Hard-fought victory, we got points this time. I really can’t complain today.”

– Quarterback Aidan Chiles completed 24 of 39 passes for 363 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

“We have to do a lot better on offense, Aidan included. I think some of those interceptions are just down to his footwork. He has to throw the ball with the right balance, and he was just inaccurate on some of them. There’s a bit of a learning curve, but the kid is resilient. Aidan has always bounced back.”

– Smith on Chile’s recovery from a disappointing start last week and Saturday’s adversity.

“That was a big moment for me. I feel like that’s my game, that’s who I am. Just scoring a goal in that moment is who I am.”

– Wide receiver Nick Marsh on his 77-yard touchdown catch that tied the game in the fourth quarter. The true freshman finished the game with eight catches for 194 yards.

“He is very mature for his age.”

– Smith on Marsh, a former four-star recruit who has started just two games of his college career.

“I didn’t pretend to be scared. Last week I basically lied to myself and told myself I wasn’t scared. But I was scared, it is what it is. … Today I went into it with the attitude of: take a deep breath and go hunting.”

– Chiles on the difference between his first career start last week and his performance on Saturday.

“They performed outstandingly, especially in the first half on the third attempt, and made sure those attacks continued.”

– Smith for Maryland converted his first five third down attempts and finished 11 of 17 overall.

“We were put in a difficult situation where we had to fight back and fight for the win. It was just nice to see that we stuck together even when things looked bleak and came out on top in the end.”

– Linebacker Jordan Turner on the fight for victory.

“We need to get better in the running game. We have the potential to do even more. … There’s still meat on the bone and we need to keep working on it.”

– Smith of the Spartans had 130 rushing yards on 30 attempts.

“We did what we had to do to get the job done. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but we came here, played as a team and fought until the end and in the end we won.”

– Linebacker Cal Haladay on the win.

“It was quite a late realisation of how serious it was. He’s a long-term patient, you probably won’t see him again this year.”

– Smith on right guard Kristian Phillips being injured last week and missing Saturday’s game.
