Pallet, grass and caravan park fires keep firefighters busy

It’s becoming a common problem: Pallet warehouses burn in the Modesto and Ceres area, but Friday’s fire in the 600 block of Janopaul Lane spread to other buildings and caused an estimated $1.2 million in damage.

The devastating fire broke out around 7:27 p.m. and burned approximately 200,000 wooden pallets, several semi-trailers, a mobile home and a house on the property.

The intensity of the inferno made firefighting difficult, according to a statement from the Modesto Fire Department. “Burning power poles and overhead wires made the job even more difficult. One firefighter suffered a heat-related injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment, but was released shortly thereafter,” the fire department said.

Modesto Fire was assisted by fire departments from Turlock, Patterson, Ripon, Stanislaus Consolidated and a response team from San Joaquin County.

At 2:38 p.m. Monday afternoon, eight fire engines, three fire trucks and a truck were dispatched to a fire that had destroyed six mobile homes at the Del Rio Mobile Home Park at 433 South Seventh Street.

“Emergency responders were faced with the challenges of dealing with a distant water supply and enduring a rapidly spreading fire,” said a Modesto Fire Department incident summary.

The Red Cross provided assistance to 16 adults and 10 children who were left homeless by the fire; the cause is still under investigation.

Also on Monday, a vegetation fire broke out on Hatch Road near the highway. The fire was reported at 1:21 p.m. and was small enough to be extinguished by one unit.
