Panthers bench quarterback and former No. 1 pick Bryce Young after dismal start to the season

The winless Carolina Panthers have benched struggling quarterback Bryce Young, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, in favor of experienced Andy Dalton, the team announced Monday.

After the Panthers’ 26-3 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday in Week 2, Carolina coach Dave Canales praised Young as “our quarterback.” But less than 24 hours later, that sentiment changed.

“This is the best decision for our group, our team, going forward,” Canales said Monday. “I owe it to all the guys, the coaches, the staff, the players, everyone involved to be really critical of what we’re filming, what I’m seeing, and make sure I’m making the best decision for the team every week. And it happens to be the quarterback position and so it’s filled like that, but it’s all the positions and all the guys.”

Young, selected as the top pick last year after a standout college career at Alabama, has struggled to elevate his performance on Sundays. After two games this year, he has the lowest QB rating (44.1) of any starter in the NFL. In Carolina’s first two losses, he threw three interceptions with no touchdowns.

Last year, he started 16 games in the Panthers’ miserable 2-15 season.

Dalton will play on the quarterback team when the Panthers visit the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 3. The 37-year-old was a long-time quarterback in Cincinnati, leading the Bengals to the playoffs four times and being named to the Pro Bowl three times.

Since leaving the Bengals before the 2020 season, he has started just 30 games for four teams in just over four seasons.

“I wasn’t sure if I was going to start again,” Dalton told reporters on Monday. “I’m really looking forward to it. I’m excited about what’s ahead. It’s a tough situation. I’ve been through both sides. It’s tough for everybody. But I’m looking forward to it.”
