Park City city planners are considering a height exception for the reconstruction of the DoubleTree hotel

Park City city planners are considering a height exception for the reconstruction of the DoubleTree hotel

The plan for the DoubleTree site, formerly known as The Yarrow, includes hotel rooms, condominiums, public housing and commercial space (learn more about the project here).

The height of the new building, which still has to be approved by Park City authorities, is less than 45 feet.

However, the area has a maximum building height of 35 feet. The Park City Planning Commission will meet on August 28 to decide whether to grant an exception for the larger height.

About two dozen people attended the open house on Tuesday, where developers outlined the benefits of their proposal and explained why building beyond the permitted height should be allowed.

Nearly 40% of the project would be publicly accessible open space. The development would also include a new 12-foot-wide sidewalk along Park Avenue and Kearns Boulevard.

Greg, a resident of the Park Avenues Condos who asked to give only his first name, says the project would be an improvement over the existing hotel.

“I love it,” he said. “I’ve owned a condo across the street since 1975, and when they built this, it was a great entrance to Park City. But that was 1977, and it’s very dated. But this looks like a great idea now, especially the open space around the outside… I hope the city approves the elevation easement they want.”

Thaynes resident Pam Bloom agrees.

“I think it’s really exciting and it’s definitely an improvement over what’s here,” Bloom said. “I think the city would be pretty foolish to prevent buildings like this from happening, because I think that’s what we all want to see, not parking lots and concrete.”

The Park City Planning Commission will meet to discuss the project on August 28 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall. The agenda will be available on Friday.
