Park District presents plan to close Palatine Stables

Park District presents plan to close Palatine Stables

The Palatine Park District released a statement Thursday saying a recent reassessment of the Palatine Stables confirmed structural problems identified in an initial investigation.

Based on the review of the supplemental structural condition assessment report, the Park Service maintains its decision to suspend operations at the stables located near Northwest Highway and Dundee Road through November 30.

The park district’s press release also includes a timeline for the gradual closure of the stables, which have been owned by the park district for nearly 40 years.

The press release states that the report from Johnson Wilbur Adams Inc. indicates that 48% of the Lower Barn columns and 55% of the Upper Barn columns show varying degrees of wear.

“We are aware that the coming months will be challenging for the stable community and staff,” the district said in a statement.

It said district and stable staff are working closely to find new homes for the horses and ponies currently housed there.

“The welfare of animals remains our top priority,” it says.

Based on feedback from stable guests during board meetings, the district said the schedule for final activities and classes has been adjusted to accommodate the conclusion of the show season.

It said group lessons for advanced level students and show teams will continue until the NIHJA Final Horse Show, which is scheduled to take place September 26-29.

The Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA) riding program ends October 28. Boarder/lessee lessons and all leases end October 31.

From November 1st to 29th, the stables are only open to boarders who wish to train their horses.
