Park Elementary: All clear after reported gas leak

Great Bend USD 428 released an incident report after a gas leak was discovered near Park Elementary School Wednesday morning. Public Relations Director Andrea Bauer reported shortly after noon, “Everything has been resolved and we are continuing the school day as usual.”

According to the warning:

• At 11:06 a.m., USD 428 and Park Elementary received an alert from Kansas Gas Service about a gas leak near Park Elementary School.

• Students were quickly relocated to the playground while the school district began a possible relocation plan for the park’s students and staff to Great Bend High School.

• A small number of classes walked to the Panther Activity Center as part of the relocation plan.

• At 11:20 a.m., Park received the green light from Kansas Gas authorities. All students returned to the building for lunch and continued their school day.

There was no gas leak in the park and no gas was found in the building. Kansas Gas will continue to monitor the situation.

“While this is an unexpected situation on the first day of school, staff are trained in emergency plans and are working to ensure a calm and smooth response,” the district’s press release said. “We are grateful that the situation was resolved quickly and with minimal disruption to the school day.”
