Parkite Fisher secures 5k bronze and makes US history

As the sun set over the Stade de France, Parkite Grant Fisher rounded the final corner of his 12.5-lap Olympic 5,000-meter race, trailing in sixth place.

Gold medalist Jakob Ingebrigsten of Norway had broken away from the rest of the field. Ingebrigsten left a group of five other runners, including Fisher, behind him. Although gold was out of Fisher’s reach, he went full throttle and was determined to make history.

Fisher made history earlier in these Games when he came from behind on August 2 to win the United States its third bronze medal in the 10,000-meter race. On Saturday night, he overtook runners in fourth and fifth place and raised his arms in celebration as he crossed the finish line to claim his second bronze medal and make history; no American had ever previously achieved a double podium in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter races.

Enjoying another well-deserved victory lap around the purple track that is the Games’ trademark, Fisher once again proudly carried the American flag over his shoulders, picking up right where fellow American Paul Chelimo left off. Chelimo won silver in the 5,000 meters in Rio in 2016 and bronze in 2020.

Regardless of whether Fisher decides to run these events, which he also competed in Tokyo, again at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, whether he switches to the marathon or retires altogether, his name and his achievements at these Games in Paris will never be forgotten.
