Parkview Field hosts Home Run Derby X | WBOI

Jake Arrieta, Dexter Fowler, Carlos Gómez and Nick Swisher hung up their Major League baseball boots some time ago, but their drive to hit home runs has never disappeared.

They were the MLB stars taking part in Home Run Derby X, a mixed 3-on-3 competition that focuses on hitting and defensive work. The events feature four teams, each led by a former MLB player, a player from women’s softball or baseball and a player from a local college. The tour event is an initiative of Major League Baseball and began last summer.

Parkview Field was the first stop on this year’s tour.

Each athlete participating in the derby greeted their fans as they entered the stadium. Arrieta and Fowler were mobbed by fans dressed in blue and red, who were honored to take a selfie with two of their heroes from the Chicago Cubs, the 2016 World Champions. They took the selfies with joy.

The derby started promptly at seven. And this is not your father’s home run derby.

Each player has two minutes and thirty seconds at the table. The In the derby, the players of the opposing team stand in the outfield and can score additional points for their team by catching balls.

Teams receive bonus points for hitting home runs through a center field target. Batters can declare a “hot streak,” which grants them five hits with each hit doubling the value. They can also ask a teammate for help in the last minute if they get tired.

If you are like me and remember the arcade derby in the huge living room with big goals Triple Play Baseball 2001 on PlayStation 2, it’s a bit more like that.

The teams were named in honor of Fort Wayne’s baseball and softball history.

  • Former MLB Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta, Ole Miss softball player (and all-time HRDX home run record holder) Ashton Landsell and St. Francis hitter Sam Pesa represented the Tin capsules from Fort Wayne.
  • Former MLB outfielder Dexter Fowler, Oklahoma City Spark fastpitch softball star Jocelyn Alo and Taylor University star Sam Gladd represented the Daisies from Fort Wayne.
  • Former MLB outfielder Carlos Gómez (in his first HRDX), College World Series winner Paige Halstead and Indiana Tech sophomore Jack Ferguson represented the Luchadoras male.
  • Former MLB outfielder Nick Swisher, Olympic softball player Alex Hugo and Purdue University Fort Wayne standout Justin Osterhouse represented the Fillet steaks from the Hoosier State.

Two teams face each other in the semi-finals. Once the winner has been determined in two semi-finals, they compete against each other in the final.

The Tenderloins defeated the Luchadoras in the first round. Then Fowler’s Daisies eliminated Arrieta’s TinCaps.

Although his team was among the first to be eliminated, it was not due to the energy of St. Francis’ Pesa, who said such an opportunity in front of a home crowd was a dream come true.

“It’s electrifying and honestly, when you’re up there you block out all the noise,” Pesa said. “But I’ve had a lot of friends and family here, I see them in the stands. It’s great.”

Indiana Tech’s Jack Ferguson also didn’t let his team’s early exit stop him from doing what he said was the coolest thing he’s ever done.

“I wasn’t expecting to meet so many people, so it was a lot of fun to get out there and just join in,” Ferguson said. “I had the best time, I can’t say that enough. It was so much fun.”

But it was Alex Hugo and Jocelyn Alo who stole the show, each earning dozens of “oohs” and “ahs” as they fired tank after tank into the stands, at the bullseye in center field, or off the Harrison Building in left field.

Alo is the all-time leading home run player in NCAA Division I, with 121 home runs for the Oklahoma Sooners. The ball exploded from her bat. She is now a member of the Oklahoma City Spark and says hitting home runs is her comfort zone.

“I think the best thing about baseball and softball is the long balls, and you get a whole night of that,” Alo said. “It feels effortless, and honestly, I’d rather do that than play in a really, really big game.”

Alo hit the most home runs of either team in the second round with 14 and scored a total of 20 points.

But the Tenderloins were buoyed by a strong combined performance from PFW’s Hugo and Osterhouse, which resulted in their team popping champagne over the Home Run Derby X trophy in center field at the end of the night.

Hugo has twice been named Female Athlete of the Year for the U.S. baseball team and just a week ago helped the U.S. softball team win a silver medal at the Women’s Baseball World Championship, losing to Japan.

Between the two rounds, Hugo hit 27 home runs and scored 41 total points, the most in any category that night. She made it look so easy.

“I think I was just trying to get into a good rhythm and trust myself, sit back and trust my swing,” Hugo said. “I haven’t felt this free in a long time.”

Swisher was the MLB face of the Tenderloins, winning the 2009 World Series as a member of the New York Yankees but seems to enjoy a champagne shower whenever the opportunity presents itself.

“The burning in the eyes never gets old, brother!” said Swisher.

Hugo and Osterhouse were able to eliminate the Daisies before Swisher had his last turn at bat, which he said didn’t bother him at all.

“I was completely exhausted after the first round!” he said. “I’m telling you all, seriously, pay attention to the Home Run Derby X brand, we’re going to make this thing big.”

The teams stood together at the home base and watched the fireworks as the night came to an end.

Home Run Derby X will continue to visit Minor League Baseball stadiums across the U.S. next month, with stops in Albuquerque, Nashville and Durham.
