Patient at Roxbury Treatment Center allegedly leaves home, breaks into nearby house and stalks family for cell phone

August 12, 2024 – A patient who PSP said escaped from the Roxbury Treatment Center Saturday night and broke into an adjacent home has been found and charged with a number of crimes. Matthew R. Newhouse was charged with aggravated burglary, criminal damage, trespassing, attempted theft, disturbing the peace and harassment. He remains in custody in Franklin County today on $75,000 bail because he was unable to post bail.

Pennsylvania State Police were called to the area around the Roxbury Treatment Center on Roxbury Road around 10:40 p.m. Saturday to assist in the search for a male patient who had escaped from the facility. While they were searching the area for the patient, now identified as Matthew Newhouse of Harrisburg, PSP said they were alerted to a burglary at a nearby home.

When police arrived at the scene of the burglary on Crescent Circle, which police report says is next to the center, they found the victim and a young man running from their home. Police said a man, now believed to be Newhouse, broke into the home “and followed her inside her home in an attempt to steal her (the victim’s) cell phone.” When they searched for Newhouse, he was reportedly found lying on the front lawn. He was quickly taken into custody.

After Newhouse was arrested, police investigated the incident and reportedly found that he had kicked in the back door of the victims’ home while also kicking in a locked interior door to get to the two victims.

Matthew Newhouse is behind bars on $75,000 bail.
