Pattern change underway. More moisture and rain ahead.

It was nice to see rain across central Indiana on Sunday. We need a lot more, but even a few hundredths of an inch of rain will push September numbers higher. Indianapolis had received 0.07 inches of rain by 7 p.m. Sunday night, more than double the monthly total. This is now the driest September in four years and the sixth driest September (so far) since 1871.

Scattered showers are possible until 11 p.m. Sunday. After that, we’ll see fog in areas along and south of State Road 46 in south central Indiana.

Cloudy skies are expected for most of Monday. An area of rain will likely move into southern Indiana during the afternoon. As the weather warms during the day, a few thunderstorms may occur in the showers. The greatest chance of rain will be south of I-70.

Clouds and rain as well as a light northeast wind will keep temperatures below normal. Maximum temperatures will be between 21 and 25 degrees Celsius.

After a pleasant break, humidity has returned to central Indiana. Dew point temperatures in the 40s have disappeared. Dew points in the 60s have returned and will remain that way for most of the coming week. That means you’ll want to keep your windows closed to keep your home comfortable.

Attention now turns further south, toward the western Caribbean, where an area of thunderstorms could become the next tropical system. Long-range computer models indicate a tropical storm will develop and move north-northeast through the Gulf of Mexico, making landfall sometime late this week. Models then indicate the low-pressure system at ground level will move north into the Tennessee Valley, bringing rain as far north as the Ohio River by the weekend.

Because the jet stream has moved north, there is little steering currents to push this low pressure system eastward along with a projected upper level low over the mid-Mississippi River Valley. The current solution from the computer models is for the upper level low pressure system to absorb the tropical system and then slowly meander through the eastern United States, resulting in cloud cover and rain. We will be watching this to see how things play out over the rest of the week. Computer models are known to struggle with scenarios like this, but if you are planning any outdoor activities later this weekend/next weekend, keep an eye on the forecast.

Weather forecast for Indianapolis:
